LARSE '94 MARINE-LAND EXPERIMENT
In October of 1994, as part of the Los Angeles Regional Seismic Experiment (LARSE), deep crustal
multichannel seismic-reflection data was collected aboard the
R/V Maurice Ewing. The emphasis was placed on collecting data along
three long onshore-offshore lines (Lines 1, 2 and 3) . These lines included:
LINE 1 - trended N-S from the center of San Clemente Island through
Seal Beach projecting into the 1933 Long Beach earthquake epicenter and the
Mojave Desert.
LINE 2 - trended N-S along the western shores of San Clemente and
Catalina Islands through Santa Monica, and projected through the 1994
Northridge earthquake epicenter.
LINE 3 - trended NE-SW from northwest of San Nicolas Island through
the center of the Los Angeles Basin.
These three lines provide a general reconnaissance of the crustal structure
in the vicinity of two recent, damaging earthquakes in the greater Los Angeles
region.
